Draw Equivalent Fractions!

Try your hand at drawing fractions that are equivalent to each other (actually 2 others).  This is really great to do to practice so that you can visualize what different fractions 'look like'.

From Illuminations:  Equivalent Fractions

Sal's Sub Shop

Need practice with reading a ruler?  Try your hand at making sub sandwiches at Sal's Sub Shop.

Directions for game - copied directly from site:
Be careful, Sal! You have some very picky customers who really know what they want! Luckily, your the person for the job. You have three minutes to fulfill ten customer orders. Because you cater to a cosmopolitan bunch, some patrons might order their subs in metric units of length, while others might order their subs in standard units of length. Don't worry Sal, you have precision rulers that can take care of both kinds of orders. The question is...can you use those rulers when a customer orders a sub 5 and 10/16 inches long, or 12 and 2/5 centimeters long? If your precision can satisfy all ten customers, you can print out your "Super Sub Maker" certificate to show off to the world.

The Pumped Up World of PreAlgebra

This is a fun video about PreAlgebra.
From their site:
'The Standard Deviants team uses their colorful approach to make math entertaining. Features topics including integers, multiplication, division, rounding, fractions, and ratios.'

It's free. Just download and watch it on your computer. I haven't watched the whole thing yet, just the very beginning, but it looks promising...

If you like it, they also made a video for Basic Math.  Integers are included in this Basic Math video, so if you need to review Adding, Subtracting, Multiplying or Dividing Integers, it's there!

Here is another online game for Scientific Notation

Here is another online game for Scientific Notation. I guess there isn't too much exciting about it either...but it beats having to do pages of worksheets!

Online Practice Test for Scientific Notation

Here is an online practice test for Scientific Notation.

Nothing fancy, but it is practice!

Why do we need/use Scientific Notation?

Here is a great article about why we use Scientific Notation. The article is from the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research (IEER)

There is an accompanying Worksheet too! Answers are at the bottom of the page.

Coffee Shop Game

Here is a game where you set up a coffee shop for 14 days and your job is to earn as much money as possible in the 14 days. You purchase ingredients, set your price and make the coffee recipe. This is a fun way to practice using decimals!

To earn the max amount, be sure to grab paper and pencil and do a few calculations before choosing prices, etc.

Here is the Coffee Shop Game!

Factory Balls 2 - I Spoke too soon - this is my new favorite!!

OK, so I spoke too soon! Factory Balls is my new favorite!! Even my kids know about this one and I didn't. I will be fighting my kids (the 7 yr old AND the 17 yr old!) for the computer now!!

Drag and Drop a ball over the tools to produce the required ball for shipping. If you want to start over just drag the ball over to the recycling bin. Don't give up, you can complete this game.

Comets! (My new favorite!)

Hey, I LIKE this one! I'm gonna play it a lot! (yes, I know that 'gonna' is incorrect grammar, so don't use it in your essays!)

Here it is1 You get to shoot comets with lasers!!

Martian Math

Answer questions about square roots, and powers of multiplication as you help some not-very-bright aliens repair their ship in this math game.

This is fun! Bring paper and pencil for the big numbers!

Martian Math

Ever Ask 'When would I ever use this math?'

Here are some 'mini-movies' about real-life occupations/situations where you need to use various math concepts. From The Futures Channel...

Some of the movies:
Designing Stronger Skateboards
Tracking Lightning
Undersea Treasure
The Salt Marsh Ecosystem
Recycling: Winning the War on Waste
Building Custom Guitars

There are more movies once you get to The Futures Channel.

Equivalent Fractions again!

I found another fraction game. If you need practice reducing fractions, here is a game for you.

Object is to release and guide the falling balls into the correct barrel. Each barrel is divided and colored to represent the reduced fraction. Caution: the colors are a little hard to see, so before you release the ball, figure out how 'full' the barrels are.

Then comes the challenge of getting the ball into the barrels. I had to keep trying and trying to get the ball into the barrel.

How did you do? Let me know in the comment section!

Equivalent Fractions

Super video to explain how to find equivalent fractions...

When would you use this? Adding fractions, subtracting fractions and actually the 'backwards' version of equivalent fractions is reducing fractions, and we all know that the unwritten rule in fractions is to always reduce!!

Here it is!

Addition & Subtraction of Fractions

Wow! This one is good! Serves two purposes here.

The first part of the video is excellent for showing how to add fractions with the same denominator, then it goes into subtracting fractions. He mentions that you can replay video if you need to...

Then he goes into more subtraction problems, but he includes problems with negative fractions - or rather the answer may end up negative. So, if you're OK with negative numbers, then the end of the video is great!

If you haven't done integers yet, then stop the video after the problem one-half minus one-third.

Here it is!

Order of Operations

Lest you think all I have is a song (as in previous post), here is a video where order of operations is taught, step-by-step.

Remember, you can replay it as often as you like!

Order of Operations video

That was Part I.

Here is Part II.

Order of Operations Song!

Ran across this one this morning and thought it was so cute. Yes, I said cute! Some of the other videos aren't so...cute. (Just my opinion though)

Interactive Flashcards

Found some interactive flashcards!!
YEAH flashcards!!
GO flashcards!!

Here's the link:
Flashcards with Negative Numbers

You can actually practice addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. You choose which you need to practice. Even has a timer you can turn on or off. I recommend as you are practicing with integers, to turn it off first and then as it gets easier, turn it on.

Have fun with Flashcards!!

Math Car Racing

OK, found one to help with Multiplying Integers! Just at the right time, too!

Here's the link: Mr. FunBrain's MathCar Racing
Choose Medium - Multiplication

Here are the directions per the website:

How to Play:
# Outdrive FunBrain's math car by getting the highest score.
# Choose a math expression from the row (side to side) that is highlighted. FunBrain will choose from the column (up and down) that you selected.
# Win points based on how difficult the problem is.
# Stay ahead of FunBrain. The heat will be on!

I finally figured out the strategy to it by the third time, so if you don't win at first don't get discouraged. The point is to practice multiplying integers. But, here is a tip: you will want to choose from the blue highlighted row, the expression that will give you the highest positive number: but take into consideration that Mr. FunBrain will choose the expression that will give him the highest positive number from the same COLUMN that you have chosen yours from.

Don't worry - you'll get the hang of it!

Color Chips

This is a game similiar to our 'pennies' that we use in class for subtracting integers. Might take a time or two to get used to the game, but it is very similiar.

First, drag the correct positive or negative chips to the playing circle. (then click continue)
Next, drag the correct number of pos/neg combo chips to the playing circle. (click continue again)
Then, drag the positive or negative chips, depending on the problem, to the 'trash'. (click continue)
Finally, enter your answer into the blank and check!

Here is is! Color Chips

Battleship!!

Just found another good one. Remember battleship? You have to try to sink your enemy's ships. Before you can get a hit you have to solve a one-step equation.

How a Ruler is Divided into Fractions - Video

I ran across this today and thought it is wonderful. He explains how an inch is divided up and explains the fractions.

This is the preview only part of the video. Not sure what you have to do to see the rest...

when you get there, click on preview clip

Fresh Baked Fractions!

Here's practice with finding equivalent fractions.

From game:

The word on the street is that Fraction Jackson is a dog who loves pie (pi?). If you answer 24 problems correctly, you can put your name on Jackson's list of Master Pie Bakers.

How To Play:
# FUNBRAIN will show you four fractions.
# Click on the fraction that is not equal to the others.

I tried the Hard level and they were challenging. Use paper and pencil to write them down...

Multiples!

Link isn't working! I'll look for another when I have more time...

This one is fun for practicing multiples! Not a flashy game, but nevertheless, it's great for 'seeing' patterns in multiples.

Finger Calculator for Multiplication!

Here's a video to demonstrate how to use your fingers as calculator to do 6's, 7's, 8's, 9's, and 10's. However, you probably already know your 10's and won't need to use your 'finger calculator'!!

Multiplication OR Division Facts! Popping Balloons!

You get to choose whether you practice Multiplication facts or Division facts. Then choose which set of facts you need to practice 2's - 12's.

Here's the directions from the game:
The Number Invaders are descending upon the innocent inhabitants of a distant planet. Help Trevor keep the Number Invaders a safe distance away. You'll need instant recall of math facts and a steady hand to win this game!

Can you pop the balloons? I could do OK with this one, but I gotta' figure out how to make the little guy move

http://www.mathplayground.com/balloon_invaders.html

- maybe you are better at this than I am...
